Dianne Baxendell - Bowen Therapy
Bowen Therapy Intrigued me
I had heard about Bowen Therapy many years ago. It had always been in the back of my mind to check it out even though I really didn't know what it was or what happened in a session. A couple of years ago a colleague came by for a chat with her mum who was studying this modality and I got to hear a little more about it. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to book in with her before she moved up north.
Fast forward a couple of years and I put a post on Thyroid School's Facebook page asking all the practitioners to introduce themselves (by far my most popular post). Another colleague I studied with but I hadn't seen since then popped up saying she now focused on Bowen Therapy! Yay! AND she was in the next suburb, so a whole 2 mins away! Double Yay! The time had come to finally see what it was all about.
My First Appointment
The clinic room was much what you would expect of any natural practioner with posters of lymphatic and blood vessels on the walls and book cases with lovely oils and essences and all things intriguing and lovely.
After a much needed catch up, and a medical history taken, along with the issues I wanted to work on, Dianne asked me to lay on the bed. Since I have always had lower back pain, that was going to be the focus.
And so she began. The first menouvre was so gentle I was wondering if she just wasn't figuring out where to place her hands. I'm not kidding! Literally a little movement as if the number 1 was being drawn on me on both sides of my back. Then Dianne left the room for 2 mins "to let it set" and then came back in and did similar moves in different areas of my body, each with a 2 min rest between. It was fascinating!
So to be honest after an hour of this I got off the bed quite sceptical as to the effect it would have. Dianne waved me off with the reminder to drink lots of water and take it easy. Which I did. Because I'm good like that.
The Next Day
I woke up and went about my day as I normally would. Life is busy for me, as much as I try for it not to be, so having routines to follow is my saving grace. It means if I am having a Thyroid Brain Day or anything else weird, I don't have to think, my body just goes into auto pilot and gets it done.
It wasn't until much later in the day when I was moving my computer to standing position, as I often do so that I am not sitting all day, that I noticed it.
My Back did not HURT!
When I realised, I literally stopped and sucked air in as if I got a fright. Oh my Goodness!! No lower back pain? No way?! I found myself poking and prodding my lower back like a mad woman searching for some aching pain. Nothing.
You see my back is usually so sore to touch that when I have massages I just about hit the roof. Even when my husband gets all loving and gives me a gentle massage I am constantly saying "its too hard, owwwww" to which he always says "I'm barely touching you". It's so funny that we have the same conversation each and every time, but he still continues to give me massages.
After I had my son, I went to a chiropractor who told me, if you don't fix your back before you have another baby you will be in a wheel chair for the next pregnancy. I just rolled my eyes as I do at these kinds of warnings, cause I'm tough, but it was the first time somebody struck a little fear into me if I'm honest.
Now you understand why this was a miracle!!
The real test though was my husband coming home the next night. Cover your ears if you don't want to hear this stuff "La La La La La La La"
For everyone else - because my husband works away, when he comes home we tend to "catch up". Alot. 😉 So the real test of my back would be the coming days.
Yesssssssss! It held up!! UNBELIEVABLE!! I was a convert!! Bowen Therapy for the Win!!
Emotional Release came with it
The curious thing about it is the emotions that it released. I had 4 sessions over a month and it was amazing how after each of them I would find myself talking about random things to Dianne and a day or two later I would always have some kind of ah ha moment! Every. Time. How cool is that?!!
Will I continue?
Absolutely! It is now a firm tool in my Thyroid Tool Kit! I will continue to go as I need to as it is honestly the first thing EVER to have made a difference to my back. If you live south of Perth I highly recommend paying her a visit. Tell her I sent you!
